FreshBooks Resource Center

So, you bill clients for your time and you’re tired of chasing invoices in a spreadsheet. That’s exactly the person FreshBooks was built for.

I’ve used FreshBooks myself. Here’s everything on the site about it, starting with the question most people get wrong: whether its limits on billable clients will affect you.

Is FreshBooks right for you?

FreshBooks puts invoicing, time tracking and getting paid first, and full accounting second. For a consultant, designer or agency, that’s often the right way round. For a business with stock, staff and lots of bills, it usually isn’t.

FreshBooks is usually a good fit if you:

  • are a freelancer or run a small service business
  • track time or projects and bill clients for them
  • want clean, professional invoices and quick online payment

You might want to look elsewhere if you:

  • sell physical products or need inventory
  • have more clients than your plan allows, because the client limit is the upgrade trigger people miss
  • want deep reporting and reconciliation (compare Xero vs FreshBooks)

How I review FreshBooks

I’m an accountant, so I look at FreshBooks the way I’d look at any set of books: does it keep the records accurate, does reconciliation get quicker, and can your accountant work in it without a fight? A pretty dashboard doesn’t count for much.

Prices and plan limits change, so the pricing guide is the one place on this site where I keep the numbers. If a price ever looks different elsewhere, trust the pricing guide and tell me. You can read how I test accounting software and how I keep pages up to date.

Questions people ask

What counts as a “billable client” in FreshBooks?

Roughly, any client you send an invoice to. Your plan sets how many you can bill, so count your active clients before you choose. The pricing guide has the current limits.

Can FreshBooks replace an accountant?

No accounting software can. FreshBooks keeps your records tidy, and your accountant still handles tax returns and advice. You can invite them into your account.
