Sage Accounting Resource Center
So, Sage is on your list. If you’re in the UK, that makes sense: Sage has been there for decades, and plenty of bookkeepers still swear by it.
I’ll be straight with you. I haven’t run my own books in Sage day to day, so I won’t pretend to have a hands-on verdict. This page is built from Sage’s official plan information and my comparisons, and I’ll tell you which is which.
Which Sage are we talking about?
This trips a lot of people up. “Sage” is several different products:
- Sage Accounting: the cloud product for small businesses and sole traders. This is the one most readers mean, and the one I compare.
- Sage 50: the long-running accounting software, mostly used on the desktop by established UK businesses.
- Sage Intacct: finance software for larger, multi-entity companies. That’s out of scope for this site.
If someone recommends “Sage”, ask which one before you compare prices.
Is Sage right for you?
Sage Accounting is usually worth a look if you:
- are a UK business or sole trader preparing for Making Tax Digital
- have a bookkeeper or accountant who already works in Sage
- want a long-established UK brand with UK-based support
You might prefer something else if you:
- want the widest choice of connected apps (compare Xero vs Sage)
- are in the US, where most accountants work in QuickBooks (compare Sage vs QuickBooks)

A full Sage Accounting review and a Sage pricing guide are on my list. I’ll mark clearly which parts come from hands-on use and which come from Sage’s official information.
How I review Sage
I’m an accountant, so I look at Sage the way I’d look at any set of books: does it keep the records accurate, does reconciliation get quicker, and can your accountant work in it without a fight? A pretty dashboard doesn’t count for much.
Prices and plan limits change, so the pricing guide is the one place on this site where I keep the numbers. If a price ever looks different elsewhere, trust the pricing guide and tell me. You can read how I test accounting software and how I keep pages up to date.
